Washington State Opening Day of Trout Season

Tuesday, April 6, 2010

The state’s single biggest fishing season opens April 24, with lakes throughout the state stocked with millions of hatchery-reared fish by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife and Local Fishing Clubs.

Although many lakes are open year round, the last Saturday in April marks the traditional start of a four-to five-month-long lowland-lakes fishing season.

This year’s opener offers an exciting new opportunity for lake fishers. Anglers may purchase a 2-pole endorsement which allows them to fish with two rods in most of Washington’s lakes. Gear rules and daily limits still apply. Many anglers will see the use of two poles as a way to double their fun by using two different types of tackle, or fishing at two different depths. Go to http://wdfw.wa.gov/licensing/twopole/lakes.php for a list of lakes where two poles are not allowed.

WDFW reports more than 20.5 million trout are stocked in lakes and streams throughout the state for this year’s fishery, including those planted in waters that opened earlier this spring or are open year-round. Most trout will be stocked before the lakes season opens.

Fish awaiting anglers in the lowland lakes include:

  • 58,117 triploid (sterile) trout - each averaging 1-1/2 pounds - being stocked this spring in 105 lakes;
  • 203,009 two-year-old "jumbo" and surplus hatchery broodstock trout being stocked this spring in 178 lakes.
  • More than 7.4 million trout that were planted last year as 2- to 3-inch fry into nearly 500 lowland lakes and 100 highland lakes and are catchable-size now (8-to 12-inch);
  • More than 10 million kokanee fry, expected to show in this year's catch, stocked in 35 lakes;
  • More than 3.4 million "catchable-size" (8- to 12-inch) trout stocked this spring in 334 lowland lakes, including lakes opening April 24.

Fish stocking details, by county and lake, are available in the 2010 Hatchery Trout Stocking Plan on WDFW's website at http://wdfw.wa.gov/fish/plants .

Sun Storm interactive
Real Trophy Hunting {iPod touch/iPphone app}

This app from Sun Storm Interactive is one of the best bangs for your hard earned buck. Easy to use intuitive interface, realistic graphics provide for a quick hunting fix. Your choice of three ways to aim your rifle/weapon, by using a joystick, screen or d-pad, also provides for left and right hand users. The rifle automatically reloads via the bolt after each shot. You have your choice of hunting in real world locations in Montana, Idaho, Wyoming, Utah and Colorado. You can also select one of four weapons to hunt with, 7mm rifle, 300 Mag rifle, 44 Magnum Pistol, or Compound bow. I hunted with the 7mm Rifle and 300 Mag rifle to good effect.

The graphics were quite realistic and crisp, with weather varying from sunny to rainy, snowy conditions. The animals utilize cover and often hide so well you need to look really hard for them with the provided binoculars. The animals will often walk right up giving chest shots or broad side shots, while stopping only briefly. Elk calls, bugle, and the provided predator call box keeps the game coming at you. If you blow your shot the animals will run and you have lost your hunting chance till the next hunt. At various locations animals will stay more hidden than others, with greater skill required for those long shots. The hunt takes place from a stationary stand, with a view from left to right. With varying degrees of hunting difficulty and goals to achieve before more hunts open up. This game provide for a good challenge while still keeping difficulty at a reasonable level.

Big game animals range from moose, elk, grizzly bear, and big-horn sheep. The trophy room keeps your hunting victories on record. Real trophy hunting keeps you hungry for more hunting opportunities, yearning to get that perfect shot. The trophy room keeps all the hunt details, including the location, weather, and size of animal, weapon used, and distance of your shot. For those wildlife-viewing folks you can also take pictures to view in you photo album. This game is one of the best values at the app store, with excellent replay ability.

Dick Nite Spoons

The Dick Nite Spoon is one of my top 10 lures. I've been successful with this great lure for many years. I've caught everything from trout to salmon in lakes and in rivers all across Washington State. I would recommend this lure to anyone. They come in a variety of colors and sizes to meet your fishing needs. The lures retail for about $3.99 and can be found at any respectable outdoor retailer. I also like this lure because it's made in the USA.
